Who we are

The Body Shop International Plc is a values-driven, high-quality skin and hair care manufacturer and retailer operating in 49 countries with over 1700 outlets spanning 24 languages and 12 time zones.

Famous for creating an entire market sector for naturally-based products, The Body Shop introduced a generation of consumers to the benefits of a wide range of best sellers from Vitamin E Cream to Tea Tree Oil, from Banana Shampoo to Aloe Vera Lotion.

It is estimated that in 1997/98 The Body Shop sold a product every 0.4 seconds with over 86 million customers visiting stores worldwide to sample the current range of over 400 products and over 400 accessories.

The Body Shop has always believed that business is primarily about human relationships. We take the view that the more we listen to our stakeholders and the more we involve them in decision-making, the better our business will run.

Where we come from

Founded by entrepreneur Anita Roddick who in 1976 identified a niche in the market for naturally-based products with minimal packaging, The Body Shop rapidly evolved from one small shop in Brighton on the South Coast of England, with only around 25 hand-mixed products on sale, to a worldwide network of shops. Franchising allowed for rapid growth and international expansion as hundreds of entrepreneurs worldwide bought into Roddick's vision.

The company's campaigns against human rights abuses and in favour of animal protection alongside its commitment to challenge the stereotypes of beauty perpetuated by the cosmetics industry, have won the support of a generation of consumers. The company continues to lead the way for other businesses to use their voice for social and environmental change.

How we do 'business as unusual'

Still retaining its trademark emphasis on natural-based products using traditional recipes, The Body Shop has developed a Community Trade programme which creates sustainable trading relationships with communities in need around the world. The goal is to help create livelihoods and to explore trade-based approaches to supporting sustainable development by sourcing ingredients and accessories from socially and economically marginalised producer communities.

Through this programme, The Body Shop sources raw materials for inclusion in some of its best-selling products, from cocoa butter in Cocoa Butter Hand & Body Lotion to babassu oil in White Musk Body Lotion, as well as accessory items including massagers from India and baskets from the Philippines. The Body Shop now trades with over 30 Community Trade suppliers in 19 countries and Community Trade now accounts for almost 10% of its total ingredient and accessories purchasing.

More importantly, the programme has helped to provide a livelihood for hundreds of families across the globe and brought educational and health benefits to many of our Community Trade suppliers. At two of our longest standing suppliers, Teddy Exports in India and General Paper Industries in Nepal, The Body Shop helped to set up AIDS awareness projects which now attract international funding.
